Hon. Edem Kpotosu: The Indiscipline in Our Schools Must Stop

As a dedicated Member of the Education Committee of the Parliament of Ghana, I am profoundly troubled by the increasing cases of student violence directed at teachers and fellow students within our educational establishments.

Our schools should be cherished environments for learning, character development, and nation-building not places filled with fear, intimidation, and disorder. No educator should feel threatened in their classroom, nor should any student live in fear of their peers. A thriving educational atmosphere is built on respect, discipline, and shared accountability.

The presence of violence in our schools endangers the very essence of our future. When respect for authority diminishes and peer aggression is accepted as normal, the repercussions go far beyond the classroom walls. We risk bringing up a generation that is estranged from the principles of tolerance, dialogue, and lawful behavior.

As a legislator and an ardent supporter of quality education, I unequivocally denounce all manifestations of violence in our schools. I urge:

  • Students to adopt principles of discipline, respect, and non-violent conflict resolution.
  • Parents and guardians to instill moral values and provide guidance within the home.
  • School authorities to enhance counseling services and implement suitable disciplinary actions.
  • The Ghana Education Service and relevant parties to amplify civic and character education at every level.

It is imperative that we work together to reinstate a culture of respect within our schools. Education goes beyond mere academic achievement — it is about cultivating responsible citizens.

Let’s unite in our efforts to protect our teachers, ensure the safety of our students, and uphold the dignity of our educational institutions.
